Back in the day, a captain’s license was earned, most often by tutoring one on one, not “bought” outright as it is virtually today. He holds not just a federal license to take up to 6 people fishing, but a Master’s Near Coastal 100 Ton shipping license. While always learning, he knew his fishing before he started taking people for money ( in other words- he did not start guiding to get others to pay for a boat and learn to fish). He was the first Florida fishing guide to have Internet presence and a website in 1996. Primarily his business is composed of a well-established client list, with several of those clients having fished with him for as long as 30 years. Like hiring any professional, he believes that hiring a Florida fishing guide should not be based on advertising alone.
While Capt. McCue’s professional career is extraordinary, he refers to himself as just a “fisherman” and an “outdoorsman”. His passion is sharing his life’s experience outdoors with people from all walks of life, to all who enjoy the outdoors and the water. This would include not only experts, but novices, families and children. Captain McCue enjoys encounters with all wildlife, touring the estuaries, witnessing sunrises, sunsets, finding remote or private locations to enjoy the outdoors whether that be private beaches, mangrove lined creeks, barrier island “hopping”, shelling, and swimming/snorkeling.

In the beginning he established himself as a flats fishing guide, best known as an expert in catching big snook. In those early days he subsidized his income by commercial fishing, reef fish and pelagic such as Spanish mackerel, kingfish, and cobia.
In and around 1985, he took great interest in the tarpon. By 1996, he had won his first moneys in tarpon fishing by placing 2nd in a Miller’s Marina Tarpon Tide in Boca Grande. In 2008, he all but retired from tarpon tournament fishing with over $300,000 is tournament winnings. In 2007, he set a tournament record in the Jim Beam Cup. He qualified for the invitational event at position 23 of 25. The record he set was wining 1st place in each day of a 2 day event and subsequently, place first in the entire event.
In the 1990s, Capt. McCue guided 8 IGFA World Records. He has fished world dignitaries such as the Emperor of Japan, General Norman Schwarzkoph and served as the unofficial fishing guide to the Tampa Bay Lighting, several coaches and players of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Capt. McCue has been a long-time steward of the fishery and having been involved with near all conservation management rule changes in Florida’s fisheries dating back to obtaining redfish as a gamefish (final 1988). In the area of tarpon, Capt. Robert McCue leads the world with the most genetically tagged tarpon in the world (adult tarpon, free range). Several times he set the record for the most genetically tagged tarpon in the Gulf of Mexico for that particular year. He remains through to this present day to be the only one to acoustically tag tarpon in both the Tampa Bay Estuary and the Charlotte Harbor Estuary.
"Robert McCue has taken my wife and I out on two occasions, once for redfish and once for tarpon. We had a great experience and excellent fishing both times. My wife is not a fishing enthusiast but Robert McCue coached her through landing a 150lb tarpon, and put us on so many reds that she got tired of reeling them in. Our experiences have been so positive that we book our trips around Danny's availability. As I type this I have already reached out to Danny about our 2018 tarpon trip."
"Capt. Robert McCue is a true professional and is thoroughly focused on providing his clients with exceptional service and an enjoyable experience. His is the only phone number I will use for fishing charters in the future. Have already recommended him to friends and a week after our charter I am still showing pictures and telling stories of the fun we had."
